The popular five-gesture "Rock paper scissors" expansion was invented by Sam Kass and Karen Bryla, which adds "Spock" and "lizard" to the standard three choices.

That variant was mentioned in an article of The Times 2005 and was later the subject of an episode of the television series "The Big Bang Theory" in season 2 episode 8.
